Looking for Adjustable Mattress Deals?
What's Better, Tempurpedic, Sleep Number or DIY?

Why are adjustable mattress systems so expensive? You'll find the answers in these Tempurpedic and Sleep Number reviews. And discover DIY options that'll save you $1000s.

The primary reason why adjustable mattresses like those made by Sleep Number and Tempurpedic aren't cheap is that they adapt to your sleeping preferences. Modifying a bed's firmness, and a sleeper's body positions safely requires lots of engineering and moving parts. And if the bed is a split style you can double the costs of all that movement. Another reason is that they are big and a lot of material is needed to construct both the mattresses and the base.

A Cheap Adjustable Mattress System That Will Save You Thousands

How would you like to pay half of what the Select Comfort Sleep Number and the Tempurpedic sets cost? Its easy, and you'll pay a lot less for a comparable product.

How? Order online and assemble the bed yourself (DIY). Most adjustable bed frames sold in the US are made by a single company, Leggett and Platt. Each mattress manufacturer personalizes and brands the base by adding various extras like fabric covers, remote controls and various motion options. So why not buy a Leggett and Platt adjustable mattress base instead of the expensive rebranded one?

Leggett and Platt ShipShape Adjustable Queen Base
Rated 4.8 out of 5

This Leggett and Platt powered bed frame is billed as an ultra light model. But since it is able to bear the weight of two adults and also has the ability to lift 425 pounds, it isn't exactly a lightweight.

Its not features heavy, but has the necessary basics (click Prodigy Adjustable Bed with Massage for an adjustable base with everything including massage and iPhone and iPod apps). It allows you to put the bed into multiple head and foot positions for personalized comfort at the touch of a button. And buyers report that the motor is quiet.

Lite also does not describe the weight of the 2 package it comes in. It requires two people to carry the boxes. So make sure that you get help moving it inside from the delivery person or a friend.

    What Buyers Like:
  • Cheap! Half off the name brands' prices
  • Easy to assemble. Only 8 bolts.
  • Memory foam mattress held securely
  • Quiet and quick adjusting

Rated 5.0 out of 5

The secret to getting a king split adjustable mattress set is to buy two twin extra long Leggett and Platt bed frames and push them together. Nobody but you will know that you didn't spend a fortune on a king size Sleep Comfort Sleep Number or Tempurpedic bed.

The Shipshape Twin XL base is made by the same company that makes most of the adjustable bed bases sold in the US. And that includes those at the big brand name outfits.

Like the queen size bed reviewed above, it has all the basic features and will more than carry its weight for many years to come. However if you want an adjustable mattress base with everything click Prodigy Adjustable Bed with Massage for an adjustable base with everything including massage and iPhone and iPod apps.

Sleep Number Adjustable Mattress Review and Prices

The p7 Sleep Number bed by Select Comfort is admittedly the most adjustable sleep system you'll find short of a hammock. It has both a variable firmness mattress and a FlexFit(tm) adaptable bed base. You can change not only how hard your sleeping surface is, but also your back and feet angles.

Rated 4.3 out of 5 Reviews are generally favorable except for those who purchased the Sleep Number looking for the 'memory foam experience' of having the bed mold to your contours. For those people, the 3 inches of memory foam isn't quite enough.

Here's approximate costs for the p7 Sleep Number:

    Standard queen size
  • $1,600 queen bed base
  • + $2,400 Adjustable queen mattress
  • ----------------------------
  • $4,000 Total
Split Select Comfort Sleep Number (available in king size only)
  • $2,400 king split base
  • + $4,000 (2 Twin Long mattresses @ $2,000 each)
  • ----------------------------
  • $6,400 Total

Tempurpedic Adjustable Mattress Review and Prices

Tempurpedic does not make an adjustable firmness mattress. The memory foam softens itself to your contours depending on your body heat and weight. But there's no dials or remotes to fiddle with to make the foam harder or softer. They do however make a bed frame that can alter the angle of your back, hips and legs so that sitting up and reading in bed is not such a hassle.

Rated 4.7 out of 5 The quality makes Tempurpedic a Consumer Reports best rated mattress. But the Tempurpedic adjustable mattress bed and base combination is probably going to be a budget buster for most people.

Here's approximate costs for the Tempurpedic RhapsodyBed:

    Standard queen size
  • $1,200 queen bed frame
  • + $2,900 Tempurpedic RhapsodyBed queen size
  • ----------------------------
  • $4,100 Total

Tempurpedic makes a split style base in both king and California king sizes.

    Split king Tempurpedic RhapsodyBed
  • $2,200 split king bed base
  • + $5,000 (2 Twin Long mattresses @ $2,500 each)
  • ----------------------------
  • $7,200 Total
