This Amazon #1 bed had 3,613 customer reviews at the time I wrote this. An astounding 73% of buyers (out of 861 verified purchase reviews) gave it the highest possible rating. Comments like 'Best bed on the market for the price!' and comparisons to mattress store pricing for Tempurpedic and Serta accounted for more than 22% of all verified 5 star reviews.

This is a firm bed.

Side sleepers either loved it or hated it. Of those that liked this one the most and talked about the position that they sleep in, 46% were side sleepers. On the other hand, those that disliked it the most often slept on their sides also. So if you're a side sleeper who purchased this bed and are finding it too firm. Call for a return quickly. You're less likely to be happy with this bed in the long run.

Unusually good customer service: It's not unusual to be reading through the comments on this bed and find one that says something like, 'Hated the bed. Had to get a refund/return. But my experience with the company was outstanding...so I'm leaving my 5 star review in place.' One guy said that he and his girlfriend bought a king size bed. And then they broke up. T&N gave him a full refund.

A box spring is not needed. You can put it on the floor or a piece of plywood if you want. See the 10 year warranty for support specifications.

The rayon and polyester cover is removable and washable. Hand washing is recommended. But like any other mattress cover it is best not to get it stained in the first place. Get a good waterproof protector so you don't have to worry about damage.

The biggest Complaints?

4% of buyers with verified purchases gave it the lowest rating because:

  • The most common objections boiled down to one phrase, "It was just too darn hard!" Some likened it to sleeping on a yoga mat.
  • Second biggest complaint: "I thought that I had 100 days to return it!" If you buy direct from Tuft and Needle you get 100 days to try it or return it. But many people like Amazon Premier's free shipping and guarantee. Buying from Amazon might just be more convenient if you're buying other bedding items as well.
  • And then there's this tongue-in-cheek complaint from Momma Bear...

Recommendation: If you purchased this bed at Amazon give it 14 days for an evaluation. If your body's going to adapt and sleep better, it will usually occur before then. On the 15th day, if you think it may be a little too firm or it's causing you pain do not hesitate to call 866-216-1072 to return it. Make sure you ask for a "Large Items Team Member."

If you have purchased from Amazon and it's after the end of the 30-night sleep trial all is not lost. Contact Tuft & Needle directly at amazon@tuftandneedle.com if you need further assistance with a return. Many people have found them remarkably helpful.   ~ to FAQ List

Will it be too firm for me?

419 verified buyers specifically mentioned the hardness, softness or support that this mattress provides.

The Tuft & Needle has 2 layers.

  • 3 inches of high performance polyfoam
  • 7 inches of support foam

Of those who commented on this bed's firmness:

  • 32 % said it was Firm to Very Firm
  • 51% = Supportive or slightly firm
  • 9% = Medium
  • 6% = Soft or not supportive at all

If you think that its too firm but your sleeping partner likes it, consider buying a good memory foam topper. About 1/3 of the people felt the bed was too hard slept well once they got a pad. Get yourself a pad at least 3 inches deep with 4 pound density foam. Be prepared to spend at least $150. But even with that expense on half a king bed, it's still just a third or a quarter of what you'll spend in your local mattress shop.

Tuft and Needle has been known to help with the cost of toppers. Reach out to them and ask. ~ Back to FAQ List

Does the tuft/needle sleep hot?

Trapping too much body heat used to be a common complaint among foam bed buyers. 88 verified comments specifically mentioned how warm this bed was:

  • 68% said that there was no extra heat
  • 25% said it was slightly warmer than their old bed
  • 6% said it left them a sweaty, hot mess

So an overwhelming 93% had no problems with being too warm while sleeping on the T&N.  ~ FAQ List

 Does it stink?

Any packaged, compressed bed delivered to you is going to have a slightly chemical-ly smell. The only way you can avoid that is to buy from a showroom where the bed's been standing out for months being tried by numerous strangers (ugh), or sleep on hay (double ugh).

Odd manufacturing smells right after the sealed packages have been opened have been a common complaint for years. So it is good to know that only 112 of the verified comments mentioned odors. Out of these:

  • 29% said that there was no smell at all
  • 59% some smell
  • 10% claimed it was strong and objectionable

60% of buyers that noticed a 'foam smell' also said that the smell was gone in a week. ~ FAQ List

Do the edges collapse?

No. The 10 inch Tuft bed doesn't have much of a problem with the corners folding and dumping you on the floor if you roll too close to the edge. Only 14 people out of the 861 verified buyers even mentioned this issue. And of those that did, 13 said that it wasn't a problem for them.

Most felt supported and comfortable no matter how close to the ends of the mattress they moved. And sitting down on it to put on shoes wasn't a problem either.  ~ FAQ List

What's the lifespan of the Tuft mattress?

Most memory foam beds last 7 to 10 years without significant sagging. This mattress has a good record. There's only a 2% chance that it will develop sagging or lumps within the first year.

The comments recording trouble within 2 to 3 years are rare. But making foam beds is not an exact science. Batches can vary due to everything from the weather during manufacturing to mistakes in mixing the foam formulas. If yours seems to be unsupportive or bumpy during the first 2 weeks, immediately call for a return.   ~ to FAQ List

The T&N mattress is American made. They offer a 10 year limited warranty against workmanship damage or defects. If your mattress sags or develops a body shadow deeper than 3/4" during those ten years contact Tuft and Needle to discuss a replacement.

Amazon purchasers have 30 days to ask for a return, but don't wait until the last minute. Most people know if a bed is good for them within 2 weeks. Call Amazon at 866-216-1072 and ask to speak with a Large Items team member. A T&N rep said on the comments to contact them directly at amazon@tuftandneedle.com if you need further assistance with a return (even if you’re outside the Amazon 30-night sleep trial). Don't procrastinate.

Direct Tuft and Mattress buyers have a 100 night trial — but only if you live in the United States. Buyers outside the continental US are not eligible.  One thing that I've experienced and also read in many reviews is that if you've not adjusted to sleeping on any bed within 2 weeks you're not likely be in love with it 3 months later either.  ~ FAQ List

Compared to Leesa

These under $1,000 beds are very similar. They're both quality beds and they have similar warranties. So here's the quick differences between them to help you make up your mind which one would be best for you.

The Leesa:

  • Costs about $230 more
  • Slightly softer feel than T/N, but still buoyant rather than "hugging"
  • Better for heavier people because it has 1 inch more specialty foam on top to provide comfort and graduated support.
  • Has a thicker, more solid feeling polyester/lycra blend cover.
  • 3 layers of foam. The top 2" egg-crate style Avena foam has been formulated to be similar in feel to latex. But it won't trigger a latent latex allergy. The second layer is 2 inches of memory foam. Third is a 6" foam support layer. ~ FAQ List

compared to casper

The T/N bed and the Casper mattress are both direct to consumer companies that sell through Amazon. They're both priced under $1,000 and they have many more things in common (like warranties) than they don't.

So what are the 3 biggest differences? The Casper:

  • Costs $250 more.
  • 'Hugs' you. Or you sink in further.
  • Has 3 foam layers instead of two. The top is 1.5" of latex foam. The middle is 1.5 inches of memory foam. The bottom 6 inches are firm support foam.  ~ Back to FAQ List

How Much Does it Cost?

Unlike many online mattresses the price hasn't changed often in the past couple of years. The cost is usually around $600 USD. It doesn't really go on sale, even during the usual mattress holiday sales around Memorial Day and other major holidays. So don't wait for a price drop that won't happen.

But just in case I'm wrong, here's the link to the Tuft and Needle 10 inch memory foam mattress page on Amazon where you can also read the latest reviews. ~  FAQ List
